CASE STUDIES
1. DELL TECHNOLOGIES: one-day team building workshop
Dell Technologies wanted an activity to boost wellness and teamwork in their London office. We worked with them to create an in-house painting workshop that would be fun and creative while building communication and collaboration among the team.
Over the course of three hours, eighty people worked in small groups to create a single large artwork. We encouraged the teams to embrace their different skills, and the final piece showcased how each individual's contribution came together to create a collective masterpiece.
After the event, Des O'Connor from Dell Technologies said:
"I organised for Stephen to come in to our Dell Technologies office to run a group painting exercise with a large team (80 people). We had five groups over the course of three hours. Stephen was fantastic. He made the experience fun for all involved and we ended up with a masterpiece which we will hang in the office. Thank you!"
2. SQUINT/OPERA: 8-week professional development course
A Squint Masterpiece!
From theory...
2 large canvases, one over the other, with cut-outs
A Squint Masterpiece!
Design agency Squint/Opera wanted a bespoke course, delivered in-house, that would develop and challenge their team's artistic skills.
For this group of high-level creative professionals, we designed an 8-week course that blended theory with hands-on practice and encouraged collaborative work as much as possible.
Each session used a famous artwork as inspiration to explore a particular set of ideas and skills. The course covered topics such as composition, colour, application, and abstraction.
Squint/Opera were so happy with their course that they have asked us to create another one for them in 2023.
At the end of the first course, Squint/Opera CEO, Jules Coke, said:
"Stephen's classes are far and away the best group activity we've ever undertaken at Squint. He combines a rigorous approach and a deep command of the subject, with humour and irreverence, just the right mix of a fun and relaxed setting, with challenge and reward. We'll definitely be doing more of this."
3. THE GENTLEWOMAN MAGAZINE: evening life-drawing class
The Gentlewoman magazine asked us to organise a fun life-drawing class as a present from the team to their director.
We organised an evening workshop at St Martin's School of Art, incorporating a variety of fun, quick-fire exercises including cartoon sketching, proportional practice, drawing in the style of different artists, and collaborative games.
The exercises gently stretched the team's creative and analytical abilities, while ensuring that everyone had fun and learnt new skills in a relaxed and supportive environment.
The team from the Gentlewoman magazine said:
"The office was buzzing the following morning after the session." Emma
"I thought I could never learn to draw, but after one session I believe I can." Carol
WHO WE ARE
Art Courses London was started by Stephen Nicholas and Johanna Kwiat in 2013 and has been growing ever since. Our aim is to make art accessible to everyone, from beginners who have never picked up a paintbrush to professionals who want to deepen their practice.
Our tutor Stephen Nicholas is a Beacon award-winning art teacher and John Moores prize-winning painter, with 30 years' experience teaching art in educational and professional settings.
Johanna Kwiat set up and co created the vision for the school and co-devised the programme, planned and designed our first website.
