Service Description

A practical and inspiring course. This course offers an exciting opportunity to deepen your understanding of colour and confidently apply it in your paintings. Through weekly projects and guided exercises, you'll explore colour theory in action, learning how to use colour to create depth, mood, and strong compositional structure. We will draw inspiration from the techniques of influential artists, helping you to broaden your approach and develop your own visual language. You'll gain practical experience in working with pure and mixed colours, and develop skills in using contrast, triadic schemes, and split complementary palettes. With only five students per group, you'll benefit from individual attention, supportive guidance, and detailed one-to-one feedback tailored to your level, whether you're a complete beginner or a more experienced artist looking to refine your skills. Some of what we cover in the course: *Foundations of colour theory and its application in painting *Creating dynamic compositions using warm/cool contrasts *Mixing neutral tones and greys for shadows and mid-tones *Colour impasto and textural techniques *Using light and shadow with complementary colours for 3D effects *Planning compositions with colour opposites, contrasts, and analogous schemes *Understanding the tactile and expressive qualities of paint Artists we'll reference: Vincent van Gogh, Sonia Delaunay, Henri Matisse, Chris Ofili, Bridget Riley, Patrick Heron, and others. This course is a vibrant mix of theory, practice, and creative exploration. It is perfect for anyone interested in colour and eager to investigate the full potential of colour in painting. Materials. Please bring any of the following: 1. Oil paints (traditional or watermixable) or acrylics. 2. Canvas or canvas paper, or mixed media all purpose paper 3. Brushes - bring any you have and use. Advice on materials will be given throughout the course.
