Service Description

Using your own reference image, the view from our studio window, or even an imaginary landscape, you will learn and explore how to abstract from nature to create exciting abstract landscape paintings. Some of what we'll cover: 1. Abstracted composition: structure and form, simplifying and selecting the key components and focal points in composition. 2. Use of colour: from naturalistic to expressive. 3. Colour and light: tonality and colour contrast. 4. Movement using different painterly techniques: staining, texture, impasto, open and loose brushwork, and more. We will explore painting techniques inspired by the following artists: 1. Dynamic compositions of Kandinsky. 2. The abstraction of trees by Mondrian. 3. Fluid improvised landscapes of Frankenthaler and Bowling. 4. Fauvist and powerful colour contrast in colour and brushwork: Matisse, Matthew Smith, Emile Nolde. 5. Palette knife, light and colour: Nicolas de Stael 6. Squeegee paintings of Gerhard Richter.We will also look into works by David Hockney and Georgia O 'Keefe, and others. This workshop is open to all levels: enthusiastic beginners, those experienced in figurative work but attempting abstraction for the first time, and seasoned abstract painters. Materials. Please bring: - any of your acrylic and/or oil paints - canvas or canvas paper - cartridge paper We will supply: -  Palette knives, a variety of brushes and implements to try -  Palettes 5 students maximum! Having a maximum of 5 students per workshop guarantees you will receive personalised tuition and feedback tailored to your needs and level. No generic advice and no getting lost in a crowded class. We are all about creating a supportive, relaxed atmosphere.  We will break for 45 min - 1 hour for lunch. We are located five minutes walk from Crystal Palace Triangle, a foodie basin with a plethora of cafes and restaurants to choose from. Or, you can bring your lunch and relax at our kitchen table. Coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided throughout the day.
