Service Description

Have you wondered about how artists work towards abstraction and how they arrive there? This course will give you an insight into this very subject as you will produce your own works following similar paths. It is a hands on course where we will work through 4 methods of abstraction to explore this theme in your painting and drawings. Themes. 1. Abstraction from representation/nature 2. Abstraction and improvisation 3. Abstraction from another artist works 4. Abstraction from the figure We will follow a set of projects and you will develop your own abstract paintings informed by works of a wide range of artists. You will be encouraged to try out different approaches, to experiment with ideas and techniques, and it will be fun too! You will also learn a lot about materials. You will become more knowledgeable about composition in abstraction - from works by Hilma Af Klint and Kandinsky through Cubism to Abstract Expressionism and beyond. Some of the artists covered : Helen Frankenthaler, Matisse, Mondrian, Bridget Riley, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Kandinsky, Hilma Af Klint , Sonia Delauney, Jackson Pollock, Richard Diebenkorn, Marlene Dumas This course is suitable for all levels. Experienced practitioners who are keen to push their work in other directions as well as beginners. Materials: You can use any materials for the course e.g. acrylics or basic paints, oils, water-mixable oils, canvas or canvas paper. But you can also bring colour pencils or crayons, pastels and paper. Please bring what you already use / have to the first session. You will get advice on materials in the first week.
